Modi said that though the parliament would now function from the new building, the dignity of the old building should never be diminished.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday proposed to rename the old parliament building as 'Samvidhan Sadan' (Constitution House).

"I pray that in the future, with the consent of all Members of Parliament, we can designate the old Parliament House as 'Samvidhan Sadan'," the PM said on the second day of the special session of the parliament before moving to the new parliament building.

Modi said that though the parliament would now function from the new building, the dignity of the old building should never be diminished.

"May the old parliament always remain the inspiration for our generation. When we call it Constitution House, it will also remind us of those great men who once sat in the Constituent Assembly. It is a gift for the future generation," he added.

The special parliamentary session commenced in the old parliament building on September 18 with a discussion on the topic "Parliamentary Journey of 75 years, starting from Samvidhan Sabha – Achievements, Experiences, Memories, and Learnings."

Today, the session shifted to the new building.

The session is scheduled to be concluded on September 22 and as per parliamentary bulletins, the agenda includes the consideration and passage of five bills.

Four of these bills will be placed before the Lok Sabha. Two of those have been passed by the Rajya Sabha and two are yet to be passed by either House of the parliament.

One bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on July 27 and is expected to be discussed in Rajya Sabha.
